Legalizing Same-Sex Marriage Essay - 1238 Words

Everyone is aware of marriage. We have heard about it, gone to one, or even been in one. The idea of marriage is something that is bestowed upon us and something that we look forward to ever since we were children, but what about those who what to get married to the same sex. How is that possible? As you know, everything changes at some point or another, this includes marriage. That is why same-sex marriage should be legalized. It has come to a point where the idea or a â€Å"normal† marriage has to change in order to fit in with a constantly changing society. Throughout history we always hear that marriage has been between one man and one woman, whether it be from the Roman Empire, Muslims, and most talked about, the Christian religion, but†¦show more content†¦This is an argument that individuals bring up when discussing this topic. Marriage is meant to allow couples to have kids. How can same-sex couples have kids? There are a couple things wrong with this argument . The first is that having kids is not a requirement for couple to fulfill after they get married. There is nothing that says couples need to have children. It is something that is done to show how much the two love each other, and to show how committed they are to each other, enough that they will jointly take care and be responsible to another human being. Now as far as same-sex couples go there are a couple options in which this issue can be resolved. These couples can have a surrogate, or they can adopt. Adoption happens every day, whether or not it involves opposite-sex couples or same-sex couples. Yes, same-sex couples do want to adopt children. According to LifeLong Adoptions, â€Å"an estimated 65,500 adopted children are living with a lesbian or gay parent†(1). This number is expected to rise in the future. For some people having a child being raised by a same-sex couple is not okay and they say this because that child lacks either a male or female figure in their li fe, that that figure is important for the child’s well-being. However I want to point out that according to a 2000 census the only 24% of heterosexuals have a household that is made up of both a mother and a father figure (LifeLongAdoptin 1).
